Bowmer & Kirkland has been officially confirmed as the main contractor for the Crown Works Studios in Sunderland, a project set to become one of the largest film and TV production hubs in Europe.
The Derbyshire-based firm was initially engaged for site remediation and enabling works, which began in early 2025. To ensure continuity as the project transitions into its primary build phase, the firm has now been procured for the main construction contract.
Project Update: Funding and Scale
The £450 million project, led by production company Fulwell 73, reached a significant milestone this week. North East Mayor Kim McGuinness announced a £38.5 million public funding package to “turbocharge” the development.
While the project’s long-term vision remains vast, the current strategy focuses on a phased delivery following the withdrawal of private investor Cain International in July 2025.
-
Phase 1 Status: Construction is now scheduled to begin in July 2026.
-
Phase 1 Scope: Includes a “super-sized” new build studio (125,000 sq ft) and the refurbishment of the former Doxford Printworks.
- Completion Target: The first buildings are expected to be operational by the end of 2027.
- Public Backing: The scheme is supported by a total public sector package of £120 million, including contributions from the Government’s Trailblazer Devolution Deal and the North East Combined Authority.
